Identifying a Breyer horse collectible

Considering their line ranges from baby on up to seasoned collector, Breyer had to set certain standards for maintaining collectible status in the model horse world. Many things can determine what makes a Breyer horse collectible, but here are a few less conspicuous details you'll find on the rarer and highly sought after Breyer model horses. Let's take a look:

  • Eye whites: Early on, special attention was paid to the detailing of the whites of each animals eyes to set them apart from the next piece. Apparent to a knowledgeable collector, these subtle distinctions can increase the value of the horse.
  • Blue ribbon stickers: found on older models beginning in 1961 (may or may not be found intact) these stickers will add significant value to a model horse the better its condition.
  • Special collections (particularly the Presentation Collection): From 1971-1973, regular model horses were mounted on a wooden base with a nameplate attached. Eleven different models were sold this way and are very rare today.
  • Rearing Stallions: manufactured in the 1960s as bookends, these stunning creatures were outfitted with hoof and tail pads to protect your furniture. Highly collectible if found in pairs.

Some of these details can cross categories, so keep them in the back of your mind when looking for your next Breyer horse collectible at WalkAboutFarm.com.
